The Philanthropy Award was initially created in 2018 to publicly recognize Jerry and Jan Barto for their extraordinary giving year after year, as well as honor their transformative commitment to the patients and programs of Island Health. At the center of this award, is an effort to recognize monetary donations of an unprecedented scope from those who have also demonstrated a personal commitment to Island Health and its excellence.
The 2023 Philanthropy Award for in the Individual Donor category was given to Bill and Wendy Rabel. The Rabels gave their first gift 20 years ago at the first Gala of Hope, Diamonds & Denim, and they have made a contribution every year since. Bill have served as a community representative on the Quality Assurance Committee for Island Health and is currently serving his 4th term on the Foundation Board of Directors. They have also leveraged their social circles on behalf of the Foundation leading to the cultivation of several investment-level gifts and numerous friends of the Foundation. They have increased their giving over the years, most notably donating a private boat slip and shares of stock. Bill has been heard saying that when it comes to supporting Island Health, they are “all in!” Congratulations Bill & Wendy!
The 2023 Philanthropy Award for in the Business Donor category was given to Dakota Creek Industries. Dakota Creek has been a philanthropic partner for decades. In 2002, they sponsored the very first Island Hospital Golf Classic golf tournament and continued their support of this tournament for 20 years, playing in every single Island Hospital Golf Classic. They have also sponsored the Gala of Hope on occasion and encouraged their employees to attend. In addition to their charitable giving year after year, they have been great neighbors to Island Health by lending resources in times of need. In fact, just this month, they assisted Island Health by using their crane to move a storage container behind the hospital.
